You Fear No Inferno When You Are Born Amidst Flames

Sunday Open Kino: You Fear No Inferno When You Are Born Amidst FlamesThis event took place August 27th in the Open Kino at Sonsbeek 20-24 force times distance.

The movie Born in Flames by Lizzie Borden takes place in a future where the USA went
through a socialist revolution. The movie follows multiple feminists from different
backgrounds with different approaches as they struggle within patriarchal systems. (spoiler
alert ahead!! go watch the movie!!!) A turning point is reached when Adelaide Norris, a black
queer woman is murdered in prison and all these different characters start understanding the
importance of a shared struggle and the power of collectivity. They start working together on
changing the narrative by hijacking air time from mainstream media.

This was such a rich and interesting film as it covers so many important themes including but
not limited to; revolution, police violence, intersectionality, white feminism, class struggle and
direct action.

As a kick-off to HIBERNATION these are all relevant, we want to actively and consciously reject
the idea of an artist as inherently part of an art system that oppresses on the basis of
capitalism. For that we need intersectional feminism, direct action, time, rest and a
hibernation.

We asked everyone who attended some questions and gave them the chance to write them
down and mail them to us. We got some amazing responses from which I want to share
some excerpts:
The storyline in the movie that I recognized most within my experience in art school was the
storyline about the white feminists who were highly educated and had successful careers in
male dominated fields. These women were journalists and had direct influence on the
narrative followed by the status quo. They reminded me of the trope ‘’The Exceptional
Woman’’, a woman who is deemed exceptional by her ability to thrive in male dominated
worlds by putting other women down and conforming to the status quo, or to put it in meme
terms; gatekeep, gaslight, girlboss. I have had many experiences where I misjudged a
woman in a powerful position for fighting the same fight whilst she was actually working to
keep things as they are.

- AnonymousOnce I was walking in the narrow Dutch streets, the flowers that were planted in the front
yard / graveyard of a house screamed to me in despair asking me to pick them and take
them away from that prison, even if that will cost them their lives. I couldn’t do it because I
was afraid the house owners will call the police on me, I still think of these flowers and I feel
sad that I let them down.

Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss; a very dramatic dinner party

On December the 4th and 11th – HIBERNATION, Bieb3000 and Under The Table – joined
forces to organize a participatory dinner, which took place in the project space of Bieb3000.
Ten people were invited to sit at the table, with the aim of reflecting on the complaints
procedure of a large institute.

The dinner, consisting of four courses, was served by a waiter. On the table, covered with a
white tablecloth, each participant was presented with a new menu for each course:

Starter: Indictment

Main Course: Defense

Dessert: Interrogation

Cold Coffee: Verdict
These menus functioned as a script, containing fragments of a complaint that had already
been dealt with. This script was read together, alternating with the food, and navigates the
guests through a multitude of emotions.

A Dinner Party – review written by Kleopatra Vorria

A slew of people, some connected and some not, gathering around a table with the promise
of consumption. A dinner where each dish serves as part of a bigger story, introduced
through the act of the group reading texts of correspondence, discussions, or of email
exchanges, unfolding slowly as each meal goes out through the vocal cords and in through
the esophagus.

My experience in the more passive role of the served was a lot more dramatic and visceral
than that as a server. With each dish, the dissonance between expelling the texts through
our mouths, followed by our task to consume something savory or sweet in return, was akin
to torture for me. That which we were meant to read was a story of disappointment, of
powerlessness and of isolation. The duality of this experience made me nauseous, to the
point that during our final reading I was dizzy, disoriented, and ended up throwing up in my
mouth. I think this has to do with my own personal experiences which heavily resonated in
the text, but more than anything I think it was in the chaos underneath it all.

As you put yourself in the shoes of the people who instigate this story by filing a complaint
against an institution, you grow more and more overwhelmed in the face of a system that is
not meant to work with you, but against you, “you” in this case being not the customer or the
student or the member of staff, but you the troublemaker, the killjoy, the thorn on the
institution’s side, a characterization which happened against your knowledge or will. And in
that moment, the food placed in front of you – this time “you” the dinner guest – stops being
a source of power or of enjoyment and becomes a form of command. “EAT”. “Swallow”.
“Take it all in”.

Dig a Hole (slide in) Wake Me up Later

In the winter months of 2022, six artists traveled to an old family house in the remote village
of Spain, Visalibons, to create space for reflection, dialogue and research into what it means
to be an artist. This residency period was called HIBERNATION, after which we named our
collective upon our return home.

HIBERNATION was a much needed attempt to break with internalized values of
professionalism and seriousness. We used our naivety to speculate about the art world, and
what we would want it to look like. During our stay we collectively worked on a zine, built a
blanket fort for the recording of podcasts, slept, ate, danced, and dived into our personal
curiosities.

Anne Schoemaker is a visual artist living and working in the Netherlands. She
constructs non-linear narratives through film and photography. She conducts
research into the relation between time, space and memories, and the role these
aspects play in the formation and perception of a story.
“I have a deep-seated trust in the ability of artistic processes to generate real and
meaningful interactions between people, matter, work and life. My process often
begins with an interest in the layered history of buildings, and the visible features of
stratification. During these investigations, I meet people that inspire to create new
works.”

Devoured by envy,Troubled by the unevenness of time. The warmth of her mother’s breast...Has been a devouring monster. So cold-bloodedness becomes her fleshly justice:
To be again of the world. Not a family,But a porous polyphony of matters.

Anna de Vriend is a research-based artist working and living in the Netherlands.
Together with the non-human animals in her life and her conceptual persona 'The
Sheep Lady' she creates installations and performances.
As a child, I had a herd of useless sheep, if I hadn’t adopted them they would’ve
been killed by practical sheep farmers. Since I can remember I struggle with
embodying an inevitable position of power over non-humans. The sheep lady helps
me take responsibility for this. Together we discover spaces such as the
slaughterhouse or the zoo which reveal a lot about the systems human animals use
to keep non-human animals as Other as possible. Something that is prevalent in
everyday life but not always tangible.

	Jade Mulcahy

I'm a nonbinary visual artist, aerialist, and cook who works with indigenous foods
from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I'm looking to discover and interact with anything and everything around me. I lost
some touch with my ability to create, strained like a long distance relationship.
Hibernation is for that re-discovery of all that is creative and tangible. My artistic
identity is still forming, taking shape, changed by each new experience. I look
towards people, animals, dreams, the thoughts passing by in my head, and the lands
around me for inspiration. I'm here to feed love and connection with art, myself, and other humans.

Kovac is a visual and sound artist. Their work is a constant exploration and
combination of any discipline that expresses their wide vision. Leaving the
importance of a technique behind, they combine digital and fine arts, poetry,
performance and sound production. Her work is versatile and tends to explore
identity as such - gender and location non-conforming.My creation is based on confused determination, it loops similar patterns/visual
installations. As much as I made myself into a visual artist, my creation still doesn’t
recognize consistency, and so I was reborn twice. I worked with paint, then poetry,
typewriter beats, inner characters that wanted to be embedded into sound. I thrive on
vulnerable art - so above the dark, my expression shows naiveness.

Above all I am a poet,
knitting dreams into
non-dreams, blurredand noisy reality, leaving behind technique,
and lazy reality.

You Are What You Eat And We Are Serving Noise

On December the 10th, HIBERNATION organized their second participatory dinner “You Are
What You Eat And We Are Serving Noise” at Bieb3000 in Arnhem. Ten people were invited
to gather around a table to share a meal and reflect on a story that was introduced through
the act of the group reading of a script. Between the four courses, the waiter served the
guests with a new piece of text, slowly unfolding a narrative that becomes hard to swallow.

Starter: A light soup of emotional labor presented with a shared platter of screaming into the
void.
Main Course: A spicy mouthful of steamed panic served on a softly-boiled safe space
garnished with some crunchy questions.

Dessert: A large scoop of fear on top of a tangy melange of manipulation and objectification.

Coffee: Some sugar and milk to accompany a cup of hot air.

For this dinner we created a setting to engage with the story of “Final Girl”, a story of
violence, sexual harassment, exclusion, bullying and the wrong handling of these
misconducts by the institute they happened in. The more we learn about Final Girl and about
what happened to her, the more we start to understand the negligence of the institute when it
comesto our safety.

A part of the script that did not make it through the final cut, but nevertheless raises a very
important question:

I only want to highlight, that all of these instances happened in school buildings and facilities,
with teachers, staff and classmates present, sometimes in the background but often in the
foreground, on top of and under desks, in the bathroom stalls, in the middle of hallways, in
the cafeteria, the editing rooms, in front of computers and windows, against doors. These
events are part of the institution’s history now, they are encased within its walls, and on a
personal note are therefore an unexcretable part of the education I received. The last
conversation I had with this man was one where he said he recalls none of this ever
happening, or it being as bad as I’m making it out to be, and that maybe I was actually
traumatizing him by accusing him of all these awful things.

There is a gap here, a gap in understanding what violence is and what it does, and that is
reflected on its institution. This is not a singular story about him and me, about a bad and a
good person, a victim and a perpetrator. It is a repetitive pattern of circumstances, of what
fantasies we allow ourselves to indulge in when we think of what education is, and what we
expect the institutions we inhabit and are nurtured in to be. Instead of imagining an
educational institution as a space where none of these things happen, where this is an
outlier story created through freakish coincidences, where the question at the centre of it is
one of a singular person’s morals or of judicial semantics, maybe we can allow ourselves to
imagine what a school can be, how to put guidelines in place that allow people to feel safe
without limiting their freedoms. Perhaps we first need to understand what actually constitutes
a violent education, before claiming that we have managed to completely divorce brutality
from our spaces.
